Journey Rules

To ensure you are adequately prepared for this experience, please thoroughly review the following requirements to confirm that you meet the criteria for the duration of our time together.

Insurance

  • Away Expedition carries public liability insurance covering our operations, facilitation and guiding.
  • We don't insure you personally. You must hold your own travel insurance for the full duration of the journey, covering: emergency medical treatment and hospitalisation, emergency medical evacuation and repatriation, outdoor activity in remote environments.
  • Booking, paying, cancelling

  • Getting there. If you're travelling from abroad, your flights are yours to book, or add our concierge service and we'll arrange them. Ground transport from the city to the meeting point is included.
  • Payment in full confirms your place. If you'd prefer to split it, 50% confirms and the balance is due 30 days before departure.
  • If you cancel 30 days or more before the start date, we keep the deposit. Less than 30 days, the full fee is due. Or move your place to a future journey at no cost, if you tell us at least 14 days before departure.
  • If we cancel. If we don't reach the minimum number of confirmed participants, or conditions make the journey unsafe, we cancel or postpone. Everything you've paid is refunded within 7 business days, and we'll find you another date.
  • If you're uncertain about anything (dates, fitness, timing), tell us before you commit. We'd much rather solve it early.

    During the journey

  • You'll walk for several hours over soft sand, carrying your own pack, in temperatures between 15°C and 40°C depending on the season.
  • You'll sleep outside. No tent. On the sand, under the open sky.
  • There will be periods when you're on your own, out of sight of the group, for several hours. You'll be provided communication tools. A distance limit will be established during the briefing.
  • You won't have your phone or any electronics for the 24 hours in the desert. We keep it safe and return it after.
  • You must be able to follow the journey leaders' instructions diligently.
  • Minimal talk from the briefing to the debrief.
  • No smoking, no alcohol, no sexual activity during the journey.
  • Bring your own clothes and shoes; we provide the rest. You'll complete an equipment checklist before departure so nothing is missed.
  • We can end your journey. If a guide judges that continuing is unsafe for you or for the group, they'll stop you, and that decision is final in the field.
  • If a real emergency means leaving early, the journey coordinator handles the extraction. The 30-day integration continues regardless.
  • After the Journey

  • Four integration calls, 60 minutes each, Tuesdays at 19:00 local time. The first Tuesday after the journey, then two, three and four weeks after. Exact dates confirmed in writing before you leave. These aren't an add-on. They're part of what you paid for, and the part that decides whether what you found out there survives contact with your normal week. If you have a conflict, tell us before the journey, not after.
  • Give it a moment before you pick up your phone. Most people regret going straight back into notifications. Wait for the debrief if you can.
  • What anyone shares within this group (during the journey, the debrief, or the integration calls) is private and stays between participants. Treat everything you hear as confidential.
  • Share your experience, just not all of it. Tell people what it did for you. Leave the details for them to find themselves.
  • Please note that participation in the journey includes consent to the recording and publication of post-journey testimonials. If you prefer not to appear in public materials, please inform us before the journey.
